This was my 3rd Rattlesnake 50k and also my worst finishing time, Strangely, it wasn’t the heat or the humidity but something I never even thought about that caused my disappointing time. How often does the bottom of your shoe come off in a race. About the nine mile mark as I was “blasting” (?) my way up one of the 90 degree trails, I looked down at my shoe which was now at eye level and saw that the sole had come off from the toe to the mid section. They say that necessity is the mother of improvisation so I grabbed the first thing I saw. As if by providence their lying on the path was one of the trail markers. It worked fairly well for a couple of miles at a time but I can assure you that the down hills were downright suicidal and rather exciting at the same time. Other then a few face plants and almost going straight down the mountain side I was able to finish in what I thought was a respectal time.
To all you runners with the same defective gene. “Live long and prosper”
