When the Weather Outside is Frightful

weather-post

With the cold, the weather, and especially the darkness, it can be hard in the winter to step out that door for a run.  But it’s not all bad.  There are plenty of unique things to enjoy about the season, things not to be missed while they’re here.  The next time you’re dreading your run and thinking about how gloomy and miserable it is outside, think of these things.  Can you add your own to the list?

  • The moon among tree branches
  • Deer tracks in the snow
  • A cozy fireplace to come home to
  • Bright, frosty mornings
  • The smell of wood smoke
  • Stars in the winter sky
  • A quiet snowfall
  • Fewer races so you can run without a plan (spontaneous)
  • The backwards sauna effect (cold, then warm)
  • Getting up for sunrise
  • Coyotes howling at the moon
  • Candlelight in windows
  • The parade of Christmas lights
  • Low humidity
  • The different textures of tree bark
  • Hearing only the wind
  • Wishing on a star
  • New views now that all the leaves are gone
  • Running in the dark like a secret
  • Lone leaves fluttering in the wind
  • Low, distant sun
  • A light left on for you
  • The sound of wind in the pines
  • New winter running gear
  • A clear, round moon
  • Clear air
  • The feeling after a satisfying run
  • The lavender of twilight
  • Snow swirling under a street lamp
  • The crunch of show under your shoes
  • Gusts playing with wind chimes
  • Long shadows
  • Holiday spirit
  • Time to think
  • Watching daylight change before and after the solstice
  • Fields crusted with frost
  • Seeing a shooting star
  • Quiet
  • Leaving the first tracks in snow
  • No snakes or bugs
  • The cleansing feeling of a cold run

The sense of triumph when I overcome the desire to huddle inside!
